This is a model of a synapse. It was published in science, May, 30, 2014 : 'Composition of isolated synaptic boutons reveals the amounts of vesicle trafficking proteins'. The picture is composed of the synaptic membrane, a mitochondrion, 7 endosomes, 375 vesicles and about 300000 proteins (62 different protein types) at atomic resolution at their specific location. Prominent proteins are the microtubuli (thick red rods), vATPases (in blue, two sitting on every vesicle), synapsin (green, connecting vesicles to vesicles, and vesicles to actin) and syntaxin clusters (brown, bunch of flowers). The red glow at the bottom comes from the active zone, the area where the vesicles fuse with the outer membrane.
